David Paull - CompostNow
Our guest for episode 9 is David Paull, Chief Impact Officer of CompostNow. Inspired to do something about the declining health of soil across the country, David started Compost Wheels as a college student to provide a composting service that addresses organic waste and creates healthy compost to bring soil nutrients back to urban gardens and farms. Later, Compost Wheels joined forces with another enterprising composting startup called CompostNow to scale their combined impact. Today, CompostNow is servicing about 5,000 customers and expanding rapidly.
In many places, soil nutrients used to grow food are not being replenished as fast as they are being used. This leads to increasingly unhealthy soil, which is a problem for food security. On the other hand, organic waste is produced from homes and businesses every day. CompostNow provides a service that picks up this organic waste to compost it. This returns nutrients back into the soils of urban farms, creates jobs, and reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and resulting methane - a harmful greenhouse gas that is produced when organic waste cannot properly decompose in landfills.
For those interested in starting their own social enterprise, or learning more about social enterprise, David recommends checking out local city or state programs in your area that provide services to support small businesses. On the national scale, B Corp is a good place to look for general information about social enterprises. David also recommends SoCap as a good conference that convenes startups and investors interested in social good.
